My good friend cuts my hair sometimes. It was at her Winooski apartment that I first saw one of Vanessa Compton's pieces. This large, colorful, edgy piece greets me everytime I am there. I have known this piece longer than I have known Vanessa, herself. I have spent countless hours on her website, examining the pieces in the gallery. Over the months of thinking about and planning the artwork for this piece, I kept coming back to her work. I just couldn't stop thinking about it.
I sat down with Vanessa some months ago to discuss the project, and she eventually created 8 pieces of artwork for They Say a Lady Was the Cause of It, using dance photos that have been taken over the years by Michael Heeney, Mike Reilly, and Jeremy Frederick. She would browse through the images on my website and social media pages, and email me periodically to send her this one or that one. Each piece that she has created represents some aspect of the work I have made- born from what she saw and from our conversations about my research and what has been present for me throughout this process of making.
These original pieces, and more of Vanessa's work, will be on display for a silent auction at each of the performances for They Say a Lady Was the Cause of It. 50% of the proceeds will go toward paying the artists in this production.
Performances will take place at Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center in Burlington on Friday, 02.21.20 & Saturday, 02.22.20 and at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury on Friday, 02.28.20 & Saturday, 02.29.20.
Doors will open at 7pm and performances will begin at 7:30pm.
You will have time before the performances and during the intermission to look at the pieces and bid on what you like. The winning bidders will take their artwork home after each performance, and so each performance will feature different pieces.
Here's what Vanessa says about her work:
"I’m moved by the ways our beloved planet has been worshipped and defiled, and the ability for it to come back again and again, with its Eastern cathedrals of forest and panoramic horizons of the West. I am specifically drawn to the act of wandering throughout the American West, where time is on the loose and I am reminded of my European ancestors’ seemingly endless penchant for violence, cultural genocide, and ecological devastation. Surrounded by the ruins of monstrous historical injustice amongst a settler colonial landscape, my work has a specific lens on the First Nations people of North America, but I follow a trail of broken promises the world over. The bullied and persecuted come too, and I find pain and beauty in this quilt of many colors."
